Abstract:

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is a global system of ocean currents culminating in the North Atlantic, where ocean water deep convection facilitates the overturning circulation. Projections of future climate change simulated by models in the CMIP6 archive show good agreement on a weakening of AMOC strength. Nevertheless, projected AMOC decline differs across models, spanning a wide range of possible reduced AMOC strengths over the next few decades. In this seminar, I will give an overview of this problem, underscoring the implications of future projections and pointing out outstanding questions. In particular, I will go over our recent results showing the role of this circulation on climate change impacts, focusing on mechanisms that propagate slow oceanic circulation anomalies onto atmospheric circulation and translating into extreme events over the surrounding regions.
