Center for Earth System Observation and Computational analysis

Understanding Earth as a complex System, CESOC brings together experts in Earth System Observation & Computational Analysis. The Center is a joint initiative by the Universities of Bonn and Cologne and Forschungszentrum Jülich. We work in close partnership with ECMWF and other national and international institutions to pool expertise and address the pressing challenges of global environmental change.

Mission, Vision & Objectives

CESOC unites geosciences, data science, and mathematics to better observe, understand, and predict the coupled Earth system in times of global environmental change. Our vision is to transform Earth system science through interdisciplinary collaboration, cutting-edge technology, and innovative education. We build:

  • Strong links between geosciences and data science – using high-performance computing and machine learning.
  • New modelling approaches that integrate processes across the climate system.
  • A seamless fusion of observations and models for real-time monitoring and forecasting.

Through joint research, teaching, and partnerships – including with ECMWF – CESOC fosters third-party-funded projects, strengthens regional and international collaboration, and educates the next generation of Earth system scientists.

Empowering Earth system observation through innovative research and collaboration.

CESOC is a research partnership of the Universities Bonn and Cologne as well as the Forschungszentrum Jülich. CESOC has been founded in October 2020 to support the application of Bonn, Germany, to host the new premises for the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). The successful implementation of the new location of ECMWF in Bonn took place in summer 2021. Since then, CESOC and ECMWF are closely cooperating in different activities. <span data-metadata=""><span data-buffer="">Ongoing global environmental changes require comprehensive knowledge on the manifold of processes shaping our climate system. Therefore CESOC aims to comprehensively observe, understand and forecast the Earth system in times of global environmental changes.

Building a robust network of partners for impactful scientific research.

We connect institutions to enhance research capabilities and outcomes.

Supporting young scientists through mentorship and educational opportunities.

Our programs are designed Foster scientific cooperation and promoting the next generation of researchers.
